Sheila Giolitti's work can be described as abstract landscapes, but that would be far too simple. The exploration of time as a process has always been evident in her work. That is, from her earlier figurative work to her later abstracts. Her preoccupation with time and its power to mold, be it psychological or physical, has determined not only her subject matter but also her choice of materials and the physical aspect of producing her work. “Time has always been a very important aspect of my work. It affects both our inner and outer landscape, how time alters our memories through our reaction to our experiences, and provides each one of us with our own unique reality. This is also evident in the landscape through the seasons, erosion, climatic events, and man's hand, which is constantly in flux, presenting us with new truths.”
Giolitti’s work is built up slowly with layers of mix media and industrial material such as fiberglass and modeling resins, at times sanded away with the use of power tools, only to leave behind small clues of what had existed before. The surface is then reworked, and areas of focus reemerge and grow. The final thick coat of clear resin allows for a cataloguing of time and the change that it brings within each piece. “It is change that keeps us in perpetual awe of the landscape.”
Giolitti’s paintings are meditative, textured reactions to the landscape. Her focus seems to lay in trying to capture the pulse of a place, rather than its mere appearance, and in this respect her work is very much rooted in the European Romantic tradition.
